Good communications
systems have been vital to the rail industry since its birth. Mobility in
conjunction with the need to communicate between remote locations, disparate
staff and a widely distributed customer base has led to an ever increasing
reliance on communication technology.
For the rail industry, high quality communications not only allow the railways
to run efficiently but also safely. As new communication technologies become
available the rail industry has typically been one of the leading markets
to implement it. Paging, Telematics, private wire (ETD), World Wide Web,
Internet, VDU CIS systems and integrated tannoy systems are all examples.
OpenAir and its partners apply wireless communication and application solutions
to the rail industry, including Train Operating and Maintenance companies.
The mobile telecommunications industry is starting to effect a causal change.
Access points to communication no longer need to be fixed; in fact the economies
are now such that it can be cheaper to implement mobile technology than
lay a cable.
However the appliance of mobile technology has to be carefully managed.
Not only are the technology and standards changing rapidly, but also having
information any place any time does necessarily get you anything. Receiving
200 messages on a pager will often result in it being ignored. Technology
needs to be utilized that provides specific information to a specific person
at specific place and time. It needs to be connectivity independent and
carry voice & data.
This convergence of Information Technology and Telecommunication is OpenAir's
remit. However the Holy Grail offers much benefit and can be implemented
today. It allows process to be carried out in new ways, it allows for new
measures and thus management metrics. For example, monitoring not only that
a train is delayed, but also; why and facilitate re-routing. Remotely monitoring
a station via wireless CCTV, better engine management via telematics, improved
customer satisfaction by real time information (no surprises), better resource
management via informed and informing staff.
From mobile train running information services for train guards through
to emergency coordination systems and field service, OpenAir provides the
technology and service to meet the rail industry needs.
